Literacy Connects Needs Volunteers

Literacy Connects, a Tucson nonprofit offering learning opportunities for adults and children, is seeking volunteers. More information on all of Literacy Connects’ volunteer opportunities is at or call 882-8006.

  • Literacy Connects’ children’s literacy program Reading Seed is looking for 300 new coaches for the 2014-2015 school year, especially in Sunnyside Unified School District and southwest Tucson Unified School District schools. The next new coach training is July 29.  Last year’s recruitment campaign resulted in 500 new coaches for the program, which boosted its volunteer numbers to 750 and allowed the program to serve more than 1,700 young readers in grades K-3 in eight Pima County school districts.
  • Literacy Connects’ Infusion Project needs 30 volunteers to help with Family Education Night, an evening educational experience for adults and children in the Sunnyside community. Volunteers with a variety of interests are needed to work with adults giving English language and bilingual Adult Basic Literacy/GED classes, and with children doing activities to improve reading, writing and creative expression.
  • Literacy Connects’ adult programs provide a critical link for people who need to improve their skills to get into job-training, GED and other programs. We need volunteer tutors throughout the year to help adults with reading, writing, math and/or English. The next volunteer orientation is Saturday, July 19.
  • Literacy Connects needs volunteers throughout the year to clean gently used books provided free to young learners to encourage independent reading.

From reducing unemployment and poverty to increasing economic growth and opportunity, literacy is key to making a better future for all of us. Last year, more than 1,500 people volunteered with Literacy Connects to help more than 50,000 learners of all ages in Southern Arizona.  Find out more at
