It's time for Fire Prevention Week, and from October 5-11 the Tucson Fire Department is joining forces with the nonprofit National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to remind local residents that ‘Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives'. During this year's fire safety campaign, fire departments will be spreading the word about the dangers of fires and how a working smoke alarm can give a family the notice they need to get out safely.
One of the first questions we ask when arriving on the scene of a fire is whether there were working smoke alarms. When the answer is no, guilt is the common theme. “Why didn’t I just change the batteries” or “I had planned on getting a new one” are often times the first words out of someone’s mouth that didn’t have a working smoke alarm. We hope that Fire Prevention Week will help us reach folks in the community before they've suffered a damaging lesson. Among the safety tips that firefighters and safety advocates will be emphasizing:
• almost three of five (60%) of reported home fire deaths in 2007 to 2011 resulted from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms.
• Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in reported home fires in half.
• in fires considered large enough to activate the smoke alarm, hardwired alarms operated 93% of the time, while battery powered alarms operated only 79% of the time.
• when smoke alarms fail to operate, it is usually because batteries are missing, disconnected, or dead.
