Former Mayor George Miller passed away this week. This from the Tucson Sentinel:
One of the longest serving public officials in Tucson's history died Christmas morning. George Miller, who was mayor for most of the 1990s, was 92.

Governor Brewer has ordered that flags at all state office buildings be lowered to half-staff from sunrise until sunset Wednesday, December 24, 2014, in honor of United States Army Specialist Wyatt J. Martin, 22, of Mesa, Arizona. Funeral services will take place on Wednesday in Mesa, followed by interment at the Mariposa Gardens Memorial Park in Mesa.
Christmas & New Years Holidays trash and recycling collection changes

The Christmas and New Year’s Day holidays will be observed on Thursday, December 25, 2014, and Thursday, January 1, 2015. Residential and commercial trash and recycling will not be collected on the Thursday holiday. The Los Reales Landfill will be closed for both holidays. All City of Tucson

Park Tucson is pleased to announce the installation of the first 21 new smart parking meters that will provide improved customer service to our on-street parking guests. The new meters are solar-powered and accept credit, debit, and smart cards in addition to coins, and will soon be accessible for payment through a smart-phone mobile app.

Sun Tran and KGUN 9 News are partnering again this holiday season for the annual “Stuff-the-Bus” event benefitting the Salvation Army’s Christmas Gift Distribution Program. This year Sun Link will be a part of the annual event by stuffing a streetcar. Tucsonans are encouraged to donate new unwrapped toys for children ages 0-12; cash donations will also be accepted. This year’s event will be held from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, December 12, at the following locations:

Wrightstown Travel Lane Closure - POSTPONED

The bank protection project on East Wrightstown Road scheduled for Friday, December 5, 2014, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., has been postponed due to inclement weather. Crews from the City of Tucson Department of Transportation Streets and Traffic Maintenance Division will conduct the bank protection work when the saturated wash bank has dried out. The work will take place on the south side of East Wrightstown Road between Sarnoff Drive and Camino Seco.

In support of safe, visible and lawful bicycle riding, the City of Tucson Bicycle and Pedestrian Program and Pima Association of Governments will partner with Living Streets Alliance to put on “Light the Night,” a bike light distribution and bicycle safety education campaign. Each month at different locations across the region, teams of volunteers distribute free front and rear light sets to people on bikes spotted riding without them.
Since October, more than 400 light sets and 65 free helmets for youth have been distributed to promote bicycle and pedestrian safety.
