City Launches Interactive Mural Map
Posted August 2, 2018
The artwork of local, national, and international muralists is on display in the City of Tucson. A new map from the City's GIS team shows the locations of the murals and explains what they mean. Throughout these works, the region's natural landscape, heritage, and resilience are prominent. Mountain vistas and desert flora set the stage for defining events in the city's cultural history, such as the All Souls Procession and the capture of John Dillinger.

With school out, I’ve had more time to do “ride alongs” with some of our social service agencies. I wrote about going out with CHRPA a couple of weeks ago. This time, I went out with Pima Council on Aging’s Meals on Wheels program.
Both the City and Pima County help with funding the program in addition to $60,000 in private funding. The city distributes $50,000 from federal Community Development Block Grants to Meals on Wheels.

I spent some time volunteering with an organization called Community Home Repair Projects of Arizona, better known as CHRPA.
CHIRPA provides homeowners who are usually disabled or on fixed incomes with emergency and necessary home repair. The group was started by Mennonites in 1982 and quickly grew because of both the need in our community and the number of community members willing to give their services.

I visited our new 911 call center located on South Park Avenue. As you might now, we are in the final stages of reorganizing the way 911 calls are handled. One of the first steps to doing that was having a new department, Public Safety Communications, that would handle the work that was previously done by separately by sections of the Police and Fire Departments.

The work continues at Jesse Owens Park. Although I have been touting the amount of public money I was able to secure from impact fees and service line warranty funds to put into the park, we had a couple of reminders that it isn’t just all about the money.
