Dear Tucsonans,

What a wonderful rainfall, and what lousy timing for the El Tour de Tucson. Hopefully all participants registered will remember this weather coincidence happens once every thirty years or so and, for those still riding, completing El Tour this year will earn extra bragging rights for sure! The rain also makes it extra important to watch out for cyclists this weekend. Please ride and drive safely.
We’ll send more details on the upcoming December 2 Mayor and Council meeting next week. In the meantime have a great weekend!

Ward 3 Events

-Day After Thanksgiving Grease Collection and Recycling Event – Friday, November 29 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Ward 3 Council Office, 1510 E. Grant Road. The Pima County Regional Wastewater Reclamation Department (RWRD) hosts the ninth annual event. Avoid clogged sewer lines! Bring in your used, cooled cooking grease (in a can or jar). Grease collected is converted into biodiesel, a cleaner burning fuel for the environment.

-Buy Local Month Kickoff – Friday, November 29 through December 25. “When you gift, do it like a Localist.” Local First Arizona invites you to begin the holiday shopping season right here in Tucson. Check out the website: http://www.localfirstaz.com/  Think Local, Buy Local, Be Local!

-Arizona Cooperative Extension Community Discussion Group – Thursday, December 12 from 8:30 – 11:30 p.m. Pima County Cooperative Extension, 4210 N. Campbell Avenue. -Holiday Artisans Market – Friday, November 22 through Sunday, November 24 from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Over 100 of the Southwest’s most talented artisans will have their wares for sale. Tucson Museum of Art, 140 N. Main.

-El Tour de Tucson – Saturday, November 23. 9,000 cyclists of all ages and talent take to the streets and hills of Tucson.  Participants cycle main event distances of 111, 85, 60, 42 or choose the Fun Ride  at 10 or 5 miles. Did You Know...?

…that Tucson Electric Power (TEP) has launched a new tool to assist their customers in reporting graffiti on TEP equipment throughout their service territory?   At www.tep.com  a link has been provided allowing customers to report graffiti in an efficient way by providing the location of the graffiti, nearest cross streets and a picture (if available) of the tagged equipment.  Providing a picture greatly enhances the ability to respond quickly with the appropriate materials for safe and proper removal of the graffiti.  Once a notice is received, the information goes directly to TEP staff dedicated to abating graffiti.  While TEP will continue to rely on the City for notifying TPD of the graffiti reported to them  through the City’s Transportation Department, they are working to determine an efficient police reporting process for graffiti reports directly through their website. 

…that Saturday, November 30, 2013 is Small Business Saturday– a day to celebrate and support small businesses and all they do for their communities.  Please join the SBA and organizations across the country in supporting your local small business by shopping at a small business.

…that the Tucson Electric Power (TEP)  plan to build a new transmission line to link the DeMoss Petrie (DMP) substation near Interstate 10 and West Grant Road to the Tucson substation near West 5th Street and North 11th Avenue. The new line will add 138,000 volts of transmission capability between these substations, increasing electrical system reliability throughout the Tucson area. Placement of the transmission line was selected (and relocated) after extensive public input. Work will begin next week with expected completion in the spring of 2014. Vegetation in conflict with the new transmission line will be removed first. Next TEP will install poles within ADOT right of way along the west and eastbound  I-10 frontage roads. Once the poles are installed, cable will be strong and the areas disturbed will be re-vegetated. More info: https://www.tep.com/projects/transmission/demoss/
