In recent weeks we’ve taken steps to start two important processes: 1) the recruitment/hiring of a new City Manager and 2) the work of the new Citizen’s Charter Review Committee. I’ll offer periodic updates and invitations for your participation in each of these processes. Selecting the leader of our City organization and pursuing Charter changes (via ballot proposition) offer the Mayor/Council and our community critical opportunities to influence the future of Tucson. I hope you will take an interest and offer your input along the way.
In the meantime my staff and I continue our daily, “on-the-ground” focus in Ward 3. Our next weekend cleanup project will be in August. And you may have noticed over recent weeks our concerted investment and effort on graffiti abatement along primary corridors.
We understand that our best public service combines practical, hands-on solutions that improve the quality of life in the near term, even as we steadily devote ourselves to the big picture, long term betterment of Tucson. I’m most proud of the corner we have turned together since 2007 with regard to regional water stewardship; I will be offering that same level of focus and leadership to improve our transit/multimodal planning and infrastructure during this term in office.
To that end, last week I co-sponsored the visit of Jarrett Walker, author of Human Transit. Nearly 200 people gathered downtown last Friday evening to take a fresh look at our transit system and to begin framing the central questions we must address, ideally before we further expand or alter our transit system, so we can fulfill our established priorities. We can’t avoid tradeoffs or tough decisions. But we can’t make good decisions unless we know what our values and goals are. For example, the answers to what, where, and how investment will be made in the system should be determined by whether we ultimately want uniform levels of service city/region-wide, or whether we want varying levels of service that correspond better with population densities, economic/activity “nodes”, and other factors. If we all can better articulate the impacts of transit on specific goals our community supports, budget figures and service maps will make sense. The decades-long, narrow debate on fare levels and route tinkering don’t get us there; a systemic look and dialogue will. I want 2014 to be the year we go there.

- Valley of the Moon Presents Young Frankenstein! – Friday, July 18th through Sunday, July 20th 7:00 and 8:00 pm at Valley of the Moon 2544 E Allen Rd. You've seen the movie, perhaps you've even experimented with reanimation yourself… come see the Valley Players' fantastic adaptation of this film classic. - Dispose-A-Med – Saturday, July 19th 8:00 am – 12:00 pm at Super Target 4040 N. Oracle Rd. Amistades, Pima County Sheriff's and CPC will be hosting another Dispose a Med event. - Jefferson Park Ice Cream Social – Wednesday, July 23rd 6:00 pm at the Ward 3 City Council Office 1510 E. Grant Rd. Jefferson Park is having its special quarterly meeting. Quarterly meetings are informational programs and all are encouraged to come. This meeting will be an Ice Cream Social and then a presentation by Iskashitaa, a refugee assistance organization that focuses on local harvesting and sustainable food production. And it is National Ice Cream month so all should come and partake!
- Brush & Bulky Pick-up – Monday, July 28th in Area 4 and Monday, August 4th in Area 5 (see schedule and map here). Brush & Bulky pickups have arrived! Crews visit each of Tucson's 26 residential trash service areas twice each year to provide Brush & Bulky collection. This is your opportunity to clean your yard, garage or storage shed and get rid of any debris. Please set out collection items in the area where your trash in usually collected by 6:00 am on the Monday that your collection week starts (note: materials cannot be set out more than two weeks prior to collection). Visit /es/brush-and-bulky for the details on what B&B will and will not collect, as well as access to the address look-up tool to determine which service area you are in. Next up in our ward will be Areas 7 and 6 on August 18th and 25th, respectively.
- CPSA Youth Mental Health First Aid Training – Monday, July 28th and Tuesday, July 29th 12:30 – 5:00 pm (both days) at the CPSA Training Center 2502 N. Dodge Blvd. CPSA is dedicated to providing the community with monthly high-quality, research-based and interactive trainings that focus on behavioral health, prevention, recovery, and wellness. Join them for this important 8-hour session where you will learn to identify the signs and symptoms of mental health disorders/crises in youth, as well as risk factors and protective factors for this population. The 5-step Mental Health First Aid action plan is explored and applied to youth mental health disorders and crisis situations through the use of discussions, case examples and videos. This action plan includes approach skills, effective communication of concern and support, and connecting youth and families to professional and community resources. - BackPack 2 School - Saturday, August 2nd 9:00 am – 12:00 pm at Flowing Wells Jr. High School 4545 N. La Cholla. Bring your students to the Annual BackPack 2 School Event in Flowing Wells hosted by Gap Ministries. Families will be given a backpack for each child going back to school. Supplies are still needed, so if you are able to donate, they are asking for any help they can receive, whether it is school supplies or money to buy school supplies for each backpack.

Literacy Connects, a Tucson nonprofit offering learning opportunities for adults and children, is seeking volunteers to meet the following needs:
Reading Seed, their children’s literacy program, is looking for 300 new coaches for the 2014-2015 school year
The Infusion Project needs 30 volunteers to help with Family Education Night
Volunteers with a variety of interests are needed to work with adults giving English language and bilingual Adult Basic Literacy/GED classes
Volunteer tutors are needed throughout the year to help adults with reading, writing, math and/or English
Volunteers are needed throughout the year to clean gently used books provided free to young learners to encourage independent reading.

Project Mariposa is in need of volunteers as well as donations of clothes, food and other supplies. There has been a significant increase in the incidence of groups of women and children from Central America being detained at the border, processed by ICE, and then released at the Greyhound station in Tucson to join family in the U.S. while awaiting deportation hearings. Typically groups of about 30-40 arrive at the station daily. There is a huge need for help receiving and providing services for these groups. Catholic Community Services has been leading the effort and is seeking the following items:
- Food/Drink: bottled water, Gatorade, Pedialyte, Cup of Ramen noodles, granola bars
- Toiletry Items (travel-size): toothpaste, toothbrushes, hair combs/brushes, deodorant, lotion, hand sanitizer, sanitary pads, chapstick
- Baby/Child Care Items: diapers (sizes 3 and 4), diaper cream, wipes (travel packs), child-size socks and underwear, coloring books, crayons, pencils
If you can contribute any of these things, please bring them to Catholic Community Services at the north entrance of 140 W. Speedway, Monday through Friday, between the hours of 8:30 am and 5:00 pm. For information on volunteering, contact 622-2801 ext. 7111.
- Cinema La Placita Harold and Maude – Thursday, July 17th 7:30 pm at La Placita Village 110 S. Church Avenue. It’s Cinema La Placita’s 15th season showing classic movies outdoors in downtown Tucson! Showing this week is Harold and Maude, the 1971 dark comedy starring Bud Court and Ruth Gordon. Young, rich, and obsessed with death, Harold finds himself changed forever when he meets lively septuagenarian Maude at a funeral. $3 admission includes all the popcorn you can eat and goes directly toward funding the series. - Urban Agriculture Meeting in Spanish/Reunión sobre Agricultura Urbana en ESPAÑOL - Miércoles 23 de Julio, 5:30 – 7:00 pm El Pueblo Regional Center, Senior Center Building 101 West Irvington Road. Está cordialmente invitado a asistir a una reunión que se realizará en ESPAÑOL para discutir las Revisiones Propuestas a los Reglamentos de Agricultura Urbana de la Ciudad de Tucson. Quizás usted ya esté al tanto de estas propuestas: el gobierno de la Ciudad de Tucson está actualizando sus reglamentos de zonificación relacionados a la agricultura urbana, en particular animales de granja pequeños, granjas urbanas, mercados de agricultores sobre ruedas, y huertos comunitarios. - Sunrise on Sun Link Grand Opening Event – Friday, July 25th 9:00 am Fifth Ave. & Congress St. Join your neighbors throughout the city to kick off Sun Link service with a short, 15-minute ribbon cutting at four different district streetcar stops, followed by a grand opening downtown. The public is invited to attend any of these events and free Sun Link rides start as soon as the system is officially dedicated on Friday morning around 10:00 am. - Westside Streetcar Fiesta - Friday, July 25th 6:00 – 9:00 pm at Mercado San Agustin 100 S. Avenida Convento. Join Council Member Romero’s office and your neighbors in Ward 1 for a Fiesta as the City kicks-off the grand opening of the new streetcar! Enjoy food, drinks, Mariachis and folklorico dancers, plus much more! Free public service will be available to the community through the entire weekend following the ribbon cutting ceremony at 10:00 am.
- Back to School Bash – Saturday, July 26th 8:00 am – noon at Clements Recreation Center 8155 E. Poinciana Dr. Council Member Scott will be hosting her 14th Annual Back to School Bash at the Clements Center on July 26 at 8am. There will be a free breakfast that includes pancakes, sausage, and eggs. With the help of donations, there will be backpacks and school supply giveaways, raffles for prizes like: bikes, ipod shuffle, and other fun gadgets. Special this year will be the Specialized Response Division which includes TPD Helicopter, as well as a special appearance from SWAT, Bomb Squad, and the K-9 Unit. Also scheduled to attend: Sports Clips, Zoo Outreach, and TMC & TFD giving out free bike helmets. There will also be booths offering great information on programs and events happening within the City. This is a great family event you won’t want to miss!
- Ward 1 Annual Bilingual Literacy Fair – Saturday, July 26th 10:00 am – 12:00 pm at El Pueblo Activity Center 101 W. Irvington Rd. Come celebrate the 6th annual Bilingual Literacy Fair featuring Spot the Dog! The Feria de Lectura is an event organized by the Ward 1 office in collaboration with the Consulate of Mexico. Council Member Romero and her staff are excited to continue the tradition of providing 1,000+ books to children before the beginning of the new school year. The Bilingual Literacy Fair is to promote reading literature in Spanish and English. All attendees will receive FREE Spanish Language books, backpacks, and children can enjoy educational activities! - Electronic Collection and Shredding Event - Saturday, August 9th 8:00 – 11:00 am at the Ward 4 City Council Office 8123 E. Poinciana. Council Member Shirley Scott will be hosting another shredding and electronic recycling event. This time Ward 4 is teaming up with Shred-It & Desert Metals Recycling. Your 1st box of paper, computers, laptops, printers, network cards, routers, hard drives, floppy and CD-ROM drives, copiers, fax machines, telephones, cell phones, test equipment, wire and cable, power supplies, circuit boards, video game equipment, stereo equipment, etc. Large appliances will also be accepted, except dishwashers. If you have any additional boxes of paper, or monitors, there will be a $5.00 (cash only) donation benefitting Tucson Clean and Beautiful and DM 50. - Tucson Parks & Rec Leisure Class Summer Music Recital - Sunday, July 27, 2014 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. at Randolph Center Performing Arts Building #2 Auditorium at 200 South Alvernon Way. Students age four to adults enrolled in Piano, Guitar, and Drum classes will perform, as well as the Kid’s Broadway Musical Troop. Cameo performances will showcase the outstanding music instructors as well as a few of their local celebrities. …that hiring is underway for the new shelter in our ward that will house migrant children? Southwest Key currently has 272 job openings at its new shelter on Oracle Road. The company is looking to hire for numerous positions, including cooks, case managers, teachers, and more. Many of the positions available require that the employee be bilingual in Spanish and English and have previous childcare or case management experience. The shelter will house unaccompanied minor children, mostly from Central American countries, who crossed into the United States and are in the custody of the US Department of Health and Human Services. …that the City of Tucson is offering workshops on License and Privilege Tax Reporting? Learn your rights and responsibilities for Transaction Privilege (Sales) Taxation by attending a Tax and License Workshop sponsored by the City of Tucson Finance Department.
Questions will be answered and written materials will be available. Samples of sales tax records, worksheets, and monthly returns will be explained. Sample returns can be completed. It is recommended that you bring a calculator and a pencil.
