The City of Tucson Mayor and Council voted 5-2 to move forward into the design phase for the widening of Broadway Boulevard to six lanes from Euclid Avenue to Country Club Road
Broadway is currently two lanes in each direction between Euclid Avenue and Country Club Road, with a center turn lane.
The vote, with Council Members Karin Uhlich and Steve Kozachik dissenting, was made on October 9, 2014, and supports a recommendation put forward by the Broadway Citizens Task Force. The task force is made up of 13 people representing nearby residents and businesses, and includes members of the Bicycle Advisory Committee, the Citizens Transportation Advisory Committee, the Tucson Planning Commission and the Commission on Disability Issues. Ten of the 13 task force members supported “The 6- Lane Including Transit Alignment,” which would widen Broadway to a six lane corridor and would include two transit lanes, bicycle lanes and new sidewalks.
The task force recommendation followed an intensive public process that included 33 task force meetings and four additional public meetings within the past 27 months. The road widening will address regional mobility needs by improving infrastructure for motorists, bicyclists, pedestrians and transit riders, while enhancing the look, feel, community character and economic vitality of the area. The task force will continue to work with the project team during the technical design process. This $71.3 million project is one of 35 major regional corridor projects that are part of the 2006 voter-approved, $2.1 billion Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) Plan. The project is funded by the City of Tucson, Pima County and the RTA.
The project is currently in the design phase, with construction scheduled to begin in summer 2016. For more project information, visit https://www.tucsonaz.gov/broadway, call 520.622.0815 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
