Professional baseball will return to Kino Sports Complex.
Pima County officials last week announced four teams from Mexico’s Liga Mexicana de Beisbol would train and play exhibition games at the county’s sports facility at 2500 E. Ajo Way.
"We are excited about our new partnership with M1 Baseball, LLC and happy to host Spring Training games plus a Baseball Academy here at Kino," said Chris Bartos, Stadium District director, in a news release.
Four teams from the Mexican league have agreed to train and play in a series of 12 exhibition games at Kino Veterans Memorial Stadium in March.
The teams scheduled to attend include Toros de Tijuana; Tigres de Quintana Roo, from Cancun; the Piratas de Campeche; and the Rojos de Aguila de Veracruz.
Teams begin to arrive in the region in late February for the series, which begins March 13.
The Mexican league also plans an eight-month baseball academy with the goal of developing 25 baseball players as professional prospects in the U.S. and Mexico. Major League baseball scouts plan a visit to watch the academy, according to the news release.
Liga Mexicana de Beisbol was founded in 1925. The league is made up of 16 teams from across Mexico.
