The Hefty ReNew program, offered by Reynolds Consumer Products, is closing, and Hefty ReNew orange bags will no longer be produced after 2026.
At the same time, ByFusion is preparing to open a processing facility at the City’s Los Reales Sustainability Campus (LRSC). The facility will process hard-to-recycle plastics collected through the City’s program and convert the material into ByBlocks. Once operational, the ByFusion facility will have the capacity to process more than 200 tons of material per month.
As a partner with ByFusion, Environmental Services will continue to operate and maintain the five hard-to-recycle plastics drop-off sites located throughout Tucson. Collected material will be transported to the ByFusion facility at LRSC for processing.
The transition from Hefty ReNew bags will result in two significant changes for residents participating in the Hard-to-Recycle Plastics Program:
1. Clear plastic bags will replace Hefty ReNew orange bags.
Residents will no longer need to purchase Hefty ReNew orange bags. Once their existing supply is used, residents should collect eligible hard-to-recycle plastics in clear or transparent plastic bags.
The bags are used to contain lightweight materials and help prevent litter. Clear bags also allow ByFusion staff to see the contents and identify and reduce contamination before processing.
2. Styrofoam and foam packaging will no longer be accepted.
Residents will no longer be able to include Styrofoam or foam packaging materials in their bags. ByFusion cannot use these materials in the production of ByBlocks.
