Ban the Box

Tucson became the first Arizona municipality to adopt the "Ban the Box" when Mayor and City Council passed Resolution No. 22373(PDF, 288KB). The program aims to ease barriers to employment for applicants with prior criminal convictions by limiting criminal history as a hiring consideration.

The resolution aligns City hiring practices with U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission recommendations by:

  • Removing inquires about criminal history from the standard City of Tucson job application form
  • Performing background checks (for positions that require it) only after a final candidate has been selected and considers mitigating factors of the criminal history, including the age of the criminal record, the seriousness of the offense, and its relationship to the job responsibilities.
