Therapeutic Recreation Center

The Therapeutic Recreation Center is located in Gene C. Reid Park.

Our mission is to provide programs that develop and enhance lifelong recreational pursuits for people with disabilities through adaptive, aquatic, and inclusive recreation opportunities.

The City of Tucson is committed to ensuring that individuals with disabilities can participate in Tucson Parks and Recreation programs. Anyone in need of modifications should contact the department at least two weeks in advance if possible. For more details email the Inclusion Coordinator at TPRD-Therapeutics@tucsonaz.gov or call 520-791-4504.

Recreation Inclusion Services for Youth and Adults

Recreation Inclusion provides opportunities for youth and adults, with and without disabilities to experience recreation and leisure time together.

Behavior Expectations

As in all programs offered by Parks and Recreation, the expectation of every participant is to follow the basic rules of conduct.

A participant may be excluded from a program if their presence poses a direct threat to the health or safety of others, or requires a fundamental alteration of the program.

Monthly Social Dance

First Saturday of each month from 6-8 p.m. Dances are held at the Quince Douglas recreation center and are co-sponsored by Old Pueblo Civitan.

Summer Programs

Discovery Camp 

Discovery Camp is a summer program for youth ages 6–15 with a variety of intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities. Campers will have fun making friends while enjoying arts & crafts, music, games, and activities tailored to their sensory needs. Participants will also go on weekly field trips and visit the on-site swimming pool and library. Camp participants must be able to successfully participate in a 1:5 staff-to-participant environment. Join us for a summer full of fun, friendship, and discovery!

STARS Camp 

STARS Camp is a summer camp for teens and young adults ages 16–22 with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Participants will make friends and create lasting memories while enjoying arts & crafts, games, music, swimming, rec center visits, field trips, and many other exciting activities! Camp participants must be able to successfully participate in a 1:5 staff-to-participant environment. Join us for a summer full of fun, friendship, and new experiences!

Adventure Camp (Formerly Teen Step)  

Adventure Camp is a summer program for youth ages 12–19 with learning disorders, high-functioning autism, and ADHD. Participants will explore Tucson through exciting field trips and enjoy art activities, games, cooking, swimming, and visits to local recreation centers. This camp focuses on fun, friendship, and building independence by developing practical life skills such as effective communication, organization, and financial management. Join us for a summer of growth, connection, and adventure!

KIDCO Inclusion

KIDCO Inclusion Camps are designed for youth ages 5–11 with learning or developmental disabilities who are ready to participate in an inclusive camp environment. Campers will engage alongside their typically developing peers in KIDCO Camps while enjoying games, sports, arts and crafts, and exciting field trips. Participants must demonstrate independent self-help skills, a willingness to engage in activities, and the ability to participate successfully in an inclusive setting. Inclusion support staff will be on-site to provide assistance as needed. 

Summer 2026 

Dates: June 1 – July 24 (closed June 19 & July 3) 

Days: Monday – Friday  

Time: 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. 

Ages: 5 - 11 years

Drop-In Recreation

Looking for something fun to do this summer? Stop by the Therapeutic Recreation Center! This drop-in program is available to individuals with disabilities ages 13+ who want to explore and enjoy our rec center. We offer a variety of activities including board games, card games, e-games, billiards, table tennis, art activities, and so much more! Best of all — the drop-in program is FREE! Come hang out, try something new, and make great summer memories with us!

Time: 5 – 8 p.m.

Rec Bowling

You’re going to have a blast at summer bowling! Recreational bowling is for individuals who do not want to compete and just have fun! We’ll end the summer with a pizza party. Registration fee is nonrefundable. The cost will be $11 per week for 3 games including shoes.

Days: Wednesdays 

Time: 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. 

Ages: 13+

Central Social Club

Social Club is a specialized program designed to promote recreation, socialization, and community engagement for adults with disabilities. Participants will take part in a variety of activities and community outings tailored to their interests and abilities. It’s a great way to build friendships, explore the community, and stay active! Waitlist available.

Party in the Park

Ready to dance the night away? Join Civitan and Therapeutic Recreation on the first Saturday of the month for a fun social dance for individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

Youth Programs

Special Olympics Track and Field 

This is a training program to learn track and field events and practice the skills to compete in the Special Olympics Coronado area competition. Participants will learn and practice field events such as the Turbo Jav, Shot put, Long jump, Running long jump, and Softball throw. Participants will also develop running endurance and train for various track events such as wheelchair races, 50M dash, 100M dash, 200M run, 400M run and relay races.

Special Olympics Cheer 

This is a training program to learn cheerleading skills and routines. The participants will train and compete in Coronado Area Competition and the state competition. Must call 520-791-4504 for assessment before registration.

Special Olympics Swim

This is a training program to learn and participate on a Competitive Swim team for intermediate to advanced swim level athletes. Adaptive Preschool Swim

For children with physical or cognitive disabilities. Water adjustment course designed to instruct parents how to work one-on-one with their child in the water to prepare them to learn to swim and to be safe. Inclusive Potpourri of Sports

This is an inclusive program intended to support individuals with disabilities joining a leisure class.
A variety of skills, including basketball, hockey, soccer, softball and volleyball will be taught in a fun, non-competitive environment. Only registered participants are permitted in instruction area. Children under the age of seven must be directly supervised by the parent/guardian at all times while in any facility. Must call 520-837-8060 for pre-approval before registration.

Tucson MS Support Group

Tucson Multiple Sclerosis (MS) support group welcomes anyone with a neurological disorder to meet the first Wednesday of each month and to participate in monthly outings geared toward adults with physical challenges. Caregivers or friends are welcome.

TR Night out

A fun monthly night out at the Therapeutic Rec Center for our participants with disabilities that will include a social activity, food, and friends for $5. Call ahead reservations are required and limited spots are available. More information to come next month.
