The City of Tucson has been named Municipality of the Year by Circular Arizona, recognizing its leadership in advancing circular economy initiatives and sustainable waste management practices. The award highlights the City’s commitment to innovative policies, cross-departmental collaboration, and community engagement efforts that promote waste reduction, material reuse, and environmental stewardship.
“This award is a testament to the dedication of our team and the partnerships we’ve built to make Tucson a leader in sustainability,” said Carlos De la Torre, Director of Environmental Services. “By embracing circular economy principles, we are not only reducing waste but also creating new opportunities for economic growth and environmental resilience.”
The City of Tucson has made significant strides in sustainability through initiatives such as the Los Reales Sustainability Campus, expanded recycling and composting programs, and partnerships with local businesses and organizations to promote material reuse. These efforts align with the City’s Climate Action Plan, which prioritizes waste diversion, resource efficiency, and environmental equity.
The award was presented at Circular Arizona’s Annual Meeting on Thursday, Feb. 27, where state leaders discussed ongoing sustainability efforts and future initiatives.
