RTA Next is a proposed 20-year, $2.67 billion regional plan for the greater Tucson area to continue and expand road, transit, safety, bike/pedestrian, and environmental improvements. It would extend the existing half-cent sales tax (no increase) and require voter approval in March 2026 to fund projects through 2046.

How to Return your Ballot

Starting Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2026, all registered voters in the City of Tucson limits will begin receiving a ballot in the mail asking them if they want to continue funding a half-cent sales tax for the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA), and to approve another 20-year transportation and transit plan. The ballot questions will be Proposition 418 and 419. All ballots must be returned to Pima County Elections no later than 7 p.m., on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.

The new plan, RTA-Next, would build on the success of the first $2.1 billion, 20-year RTA plan passed by voters in 2006. That plan expires June 30, 2026, after funding more than 1,000 transportation and transit improvements. RTA representatives from the City of Tucson, Pima County, South Tucson, the towns of Oro Valley, Marana, and Sahuarita, the state of Arizona, and the indigenous nations of the Tohono O’odham and Pascua Yaqui have spent the past several years working through a new plan that will continue to improve transportation infrastructure for the entire region.

The proposed $2.67 billion RTA Next would upgrade or construct nearly 31 road segments across the region, fund public transit improvements, improve transportation safety, and add wildlife habitat connectivity across major roadways. The plan also would complete the few projects from the first RTA Plan that couldn’t be completed due to funding shortfalls created by the Great Recession and the COVID Pandemic.
