Waitlist Steps

1. Apply

Apply for the housing waitlist at waitlist.tucsonaz.gov. The online application is available in English, Spanish, Arabic, Swahili, Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese.

You will need to provide your name, address, date of birth, preferred way to be contacted (USPS mail, phone, or email), information on family members, and household income. We will also ask if you are disabled or a veteran. Pre-application should take no longer than 10 minutes to complete. All completed pre-applications will receive a confirmation number. Be sure to save this number.

Please note: this step is a pre-application only. Step 5 is where you fill out the full application for the Voucher Choice Program.

Beware of Scams! For the application, the City of Tucson will not require you to provide your social security number, any form of payment (credit card number, cash, bank transfer, etc.), or legal status to pre-apply.

2. Lottery Selection

Each month, the City of Tucson will conduct an electronic lottery. Each applicant will be assigned a number for the computer program to randomly select the lottery winners. The applicants will be placed in the order their number is selected. Staff cannot provide you with your place on the waitlist.

When the City of Tucson conducts a lottery, all applications in the lottery pool have an equal chance of being selected. The timing of when your application was submitted will not help or hurt your odds of being selected in a lottery.

3. On the Waitlist

Applicants selected in the lottery are added to the City of Tucson waitlist. As funding is available, applicants will be selected from the waitlist and will have to complete a full application and go through the eligibility process. Staff cannot provide you with your place on the waitlist.

If there are any changes to the applicant’s address, email or phone number, the applicant must notify the City of Tucson in writing or using the update form below. Information on how to report changes will be provided to each applicant after pre-application is received.

4. Wait Patiently

Once you are on the waitlist, please be patient. It could be up to a year or more before you are chosen to start the eligibility process.

5. Eligibility

Once your spot on the waitlist has been reached, City of Tucson staff will reach out to you to begin the eligibility process for public housing or a Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8).

Frequently Asked Questions

I applied for the waitlist and have not heard anything yet. What should I do?

If you applied between January 3 - 23, 2023 - You should have received a letter stating you are on the waitlist. If you have not received a letter, please email tucsonwaitinglist@tucsonaz.gov or call (520) 791-5840 to have staff check on your waitlist status and to ensure your correct mailing address is on file.

If you applied after January 24, 2023 - You are still in the pre-application status waiting to be selected by the lottery for the waitlist. If you are selected for the lottery, you will receive a letter in the mail.

I got a letter in the mail. What does it mean?

If you applied between January 3-23, 2023, you were mailed a letter stating you were placed on the waitlist. This letter asks you to register for the resident portal.

The resident portal is an online database where you can change your personal information. However, this function is being repaired. If you are having trouble entering your changes, keep trying to log in and update your information. You can also email your changes to tucsonwaitinglist@tucsonaz.gov.

I am unable to register for the portal. What should I do?

If you are unable to register for the portal, it does not mean you will lose your place or be removed from the waitlist. This is just an online tool to help you update your personal information.

Please email tucsonwaitinglist@tucsonaz.gov or call (520) 791-5840 to let us know if you are unable to register, and staff will help you get registered.

What is my status on the waitlist?

If you have applied for the waitlist, you are either currently on the waitlist or your file is in process. There is no in between.

Please make sure your mailing address and/or contact information are up to date. This is important because a letter will be mailed to the address you have on file when you are selected.

Update your Waitlist Contact Information

Please be patient, as there are currently 15,000+ applications to join the waitlist. It could be up to a year or more before you are chosen to start the eligibility process.
