A “Sky Islands” Play Experience is Coming to Silverlake Park!
Thanks to Tucson Delivers Proposition 407 bond funding, Silverlake Park will soon receive a new walking path connection, new covered basketball court, resurfaced parking lots - and a whole new way to play!
In spring 2025 outreach, a majority of kids (and grown-up kids at heart) let us know they would most like to see the Sky Islands play concept brought to life at Silverlake Park. Parks and Recreation is looking forward to advancing the project so kids of all ages, interests, and abilities have a new opportunity to “float like a butterfly, soar like a hawk, slide like a salamander, and pounce like a bobcat.”

Next Steps
Parks and Recreation will use the feedback gathered to date to refine the Sky Islands concept and move it into construction documentation and permitting. Construction is anticipated to start in spring 2026.
Project History
To learn more about what kind of play features the community would like to see at Silverlake Park, Parks and Recreation hosted a community meeting on Feb. 26, 2025, at Quincie Douglas Center, circulated an online survey from Feb. 26-March 19, 2025, and worked with ~100 K-3 students at Southside Community School to create their own 3D play designs and vote for their favorite play elements.
Through our outreach we learned that kids are really interested in opportunities to spin, climb, swing, slide, cross over obstacles, create things in a sand kitchen, and connect with nature.
Check out some of their awesome designs and the results of the community survey below!
Parks and Recreation used the feedback from the community meeting, online survey, and youth outreach to shape two different play options for the community to review: Sky Islands and Nature’s Network.
Parks and Recreation unveiled the concepts for community feedback at the Egg Hop on Apr. 5, 2025, circulated an online survey from Apr. 5-Apr. 27, and checked back in with K-3 students at Southside Community School on Apr. 29 so they could vote for their favorite option and provide additional feedback.
Students had some excellent new ideas including adding a tree house with a zipline, integrating monkey bars, adding solo-spinner options, and including a “the floor is lava” circuit with steppers and rope.
