Oversize/Overweight Load Permits

The Arizona Department of Transportation, Motor Vehicle Division issues permits for oversize/overweight loads on state routes. A local permit from the Tucson Police Department is required for travel on Tucson roads.

State requirements for oversize/overweight loads may be found in Arizona Administrative Code, Title 17, Chapter 6 and Arizona Revised Statutes, Title 28, Chapter 3, Articles 18 and 19.

In addition, City of Tucson requirements for oversize/overweight loads may be found in Tucson City Code, Chapter 20, Article 1, Sections 20-15, 20-15.1, 20-15.2, and 20-16.

Get a local permit

Step 2.Provide a copy of your state oversize/overweight permit

Omit this step if your route does not include any state roads.

Step 3.Provide a copy of your proposed route

If weight exceeds 250,000 pounds, provide a route analysis by a registered professional engineer.

Step 4.Submit paperwork to TPD

Come in person to 1310 West Miracle Mile, Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., excluding holidays.

Step 5.Review by TDTM

TPD submits the paperwork to TDTM, the Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility, for route review, which takes a minimum of three business days.

Step 6.Receive notification, pay fee (if applicable)

TDTM notifies you and TPD whether your permit is approved or denied. If approved, contact TPD impounds to request your permit, which can be done in person, by email, or over the phone. TPD can also accept payment over the phone.

Transport restrictions

Step 1.Oversize/overweight loads may not be moved

  • Between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m., or 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday
  • On City of Tucson holidays: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr.’s Birthday, Presidents’ Day, Cesar Chavez Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day

Step 2.Weekends and holidays require special permission

Oversize/overweight loads may only be moved on weekends and holidays with special permission from the Chief of Police or his/her designee.
