5th St, 9th/7th St, 9th/Castro Ave Bicycle Boulevards

ABOUT THE PROJECTS

The 5th Street, 9th/7th Street, and 9th Avenue/Castro Ave Bicycle Boulevard projects use low volume neighborhood streets to expand our citywide low-stress biking network by creating routes to jobs, neighborhood destinations, schools, and parks. These projects are identified in the City of Tucson Bicycle Boulevard Master Plan(PDF, 82MB) and funded by the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) bicycle boulevard package.

  • 5th St Bicycle Boulevard spans from Euclid Avenue to Sixth Avenue, connecting the University of Arizona campus to the future 6th Avenue protected bike lane.
  • 9th/7th Street Bicycle Boulevard extends from Fourth Avenue to Treat Avenue and is approximately 2.1 miles long.
  • 9th/Castro Avenue Bicycle Boulevard, from St. Mary’s Road to Ft. Lowell Road, is 2.7 miles long and crosses the Pima Community College Downtown campus.

WHY BICYCLE BOULEVARDS?

Bicycle Boulevards are a cost-effective way to provide low-stress routes for people that want to bike in their neighborhood or across town. The City of Tucson's Bicycle Boulevard Master Plan(PDF, 82MB) outlines a vision for a connected network of Bicycle Boulevards that will expand access to healthy transportation and recreation options citywide.

Bicycle Boulevards are more than improved routes for bicyclists. They improve safety for everyone who uses the street by slowing and reducing cut-through traffic and making it easier for people walking and biking to cross busy streets. When traffic calming features such as neighborhood traffic circles and curb extensions are installed, there may also be opportunities to add landscaping that shades, cools, and beautifies the street.

PROJECT GOALS

  • Encourage walking and biking: provide comfortable alternatives to walking and biking on major streets
  • Slow and reduce cut-through traffic: calm vehicle traffic to provide a more comfortable walking and biking experience
  • Provide enhanced crossings: signalized crossings and other enhancements improve walking and biking across busy streets
