The 22nd Street Bridge Revitalization Project, that will replace the existing weight-restricted bridge over the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) between Kino Parkway and Tucson Boulevard, as well as increase the number of travel lanes in each direction for improved east-west connectivity, is scheduled to begin construction in February 2026.

Before this work begins, the City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM), along with the Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) and the contractor, Granite Construction, would like to invite the community to attend a public open house to learn more about the project, overall schedule, impacts to travel, meet the project team and ask any questions.

Randolph Recreation Center Gym
200 S. Alvernon Way
5:30 p.m. – 7 p.m.

The 22nd Street Bridge will be widened from a four-lane divided roadway to a six-lane divided roadway to match the lane configurations on each end of the project. This will increase the operational capacity and remove the bottleneck created by the current four-lane configuration. The 22nd Street Bridge is structurally deficient and will be replaced with a new bridge along the same alignment. The replacement of the existing weight-restricted bridge will eliminate the need for truck detours and provide more direct lines of travel for freight and transit.

The project also includes pedestrian and bicycle facilities on each side of the roadway, as well as improved roadway lighting, and drainage improvements.

On August 11, 2022, The City of Tucson was awarded $25 million in federal grant funding through the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program, which invests in communities to modernize roads and critical infrastructure. DTM will use the funds to help deliver the 22nd Street Bridge Revitalization Project.

In September 2022, pre-construction activities were completed as part of this project. These activities included sidewalks and ADA ramps on Wilson Avenue. In 2022 and 2023 multiple outreach meetings were held to discuss the overall design of the bridge, and the project was redesigned to address concerns raised by the community.

The Regional Transportation Authority, a political subdivision of the state and independently governed, has invested more than $1.4 billion in transportation projects and services to improve mobility, safety, economic vitality and quality of life in the region. The RTA collects a half-cent excise (sales) tax from its special taxing district within Pima County to fund its 20-year regional transportation plan. The plan and tax were approved by voters in May 2006. The 22nd Street Bridge Revitalization Project is part of the RTA plan and is managed by the City of Tucson.
