Flashing Yellow Arrow Improvements

Flashing Yellow Arrow

Beginning today, June 16, 2026, P.A.C.E. Electrical Construction, Inc., under contract with the City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM), will begin the installation of flashing yellow arrow signals at the intersection of Valencia Road and Santa Clara Avenue. This will be the first of nine intersections to receive these federally funded improvements.

DTM is upgrading intersections throughout the community with flashing yellow left-turn arrows to enhance safety and improve traffic operations. Research has indicated that left-turn collisions are reduced with flashing yellow arrows. The upgraded signals also offer greater operational flexibility, allowing traffic engineers to adjust left-turn movements based on traffic conditions and pedestrian activity. For example, left turns can be restricted to protected green-arrow movements during certain times of day, and left-turning traffic can be held with a red arrow while pedestrians safely cross the intersection.

When a flashing yellow left-turn arrow is displayed, motorists may turn left after yielding to pedestrians, bicyclists, and oncoming traffic, and should proceed only when it is safe to do so.

Other intersections in this package include:

  • Via Ingresso and Mission Road
  • Roger Road and Flowing Wells Road
  • River Road and Hacienda del Sol Road
  • Wrightstown Road and Pantano Road
  • 29th Street and Craycroft Road
  • 29th Street and Swan Road
  • Golf Links Road and Swan Road
  • Grant Road and Swan Road

Each intersection is scheduled to take one day to complete, with crews working from about 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Traffic control will be in place during working hours and access to at least one crosswalk per intersection will be maintained. Police officers will be on site to help direct traffic and to assist pedestrians through the work zone. Crews will complete one intersection every two weeks and are scheduled to complete all intersections by the end of September 2026. The schedule is subject to change due to inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances.

We ask the traveling public to please obey all traffic control signs and watch for construction personnel in the area.
