Title VI / Civil Rights

Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is the main legal authority for the Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility's (DTM) external nondiscrimination programs. Title VI prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, sex or national origin in programs or activities receiving federal financial assistance. Once an agency accepts federal funds, all of its programs and activities are covered, regardless of their funding source. Related statutes and presidential executive orders under the umbrella of Title VI address environmental justice (EJ) in minority and low-income populations and services to those individuals with limited English proficiency (LEP), women and the disabled.

Submitting a Title VI Complaint

Any person who believes that he or she, either individually, as a member of any specific class of persons, or in connection with any minority contractor, has been subjected to discrimination prohibited by Title VI of Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Civil Rights Restoration Act of 1987 may file a complaint at no charge. A formal complaint must be filed in person or via U.S. Mail within 180 calendar days of the alleged act of discrimination or of the date when the alleged discrimination became known to the complainant(s), or where there has been a continuing course of conduct, the date on which the conduct was discontinued or the latest instance of the conduct.
