Calling all Recycling Superheroes!

The City of Tucson Environmental Services Department is proud to announce the winner of its 2026 Recycling Superheroes Truck Poster Contest, celebrating student creativity and environmental stewardship across the community.

Sixth-grade student Maya D. from Academy of Tucson Middle School has been selected as this year’s winner. Her design, inspired by the theme “Recycling Superheroes,” will be featured on the side of a City of Tucson collection truck, helping spread the message of waste reduction and recycling to residents across the city.

The winner and winning design was be recognized during a special event at the school. The celebration will include remarks from school leadership, and Ward 2 Councilmember Paul Cunningham, followed by the unveiling of the truck displaying Maya’s artwork.

The Recycling Poster Contest, originally launched in 2013, returned this year after a pause during the pandemic. Open to students in grades 4–8, the contest invited participants to creatively showcase the importance of recycling and sustainability in Tucson.

“This contest is a powerful way to engage young people to think about their community’s environment,” said Environmental Services Deputy Director, Pat Tapia. “More than 75 students submitted artwork this year.”

Recycling has been available to all Tucson households since 2002. Materials collected in blue bins are processed locally and turned into new products, supporting the city’s ongoing efforts to reduce waste.

Deadline was March 6, 2026
