Improvements
Improvements to the Outdoor Performance Center are funded by Tucson Delivers Proposition 407 voter-approved bond funds. In November 2018, City of Tucson voters approved Proposition 407, a $225 million bond package for capital improvements. The bond funds are dedicated to improving City park amenities (playgrounds, sports fields, pools, splash pads, and recreation centers) as well as connections (pedestrian pathways, bicycle pathways, and pedestrian and bicycle safety).
In 2023, Parks and Recreation engaged event hosts who use the Outdoor Performance Center at Gene C. Reid Park to understand what types of improvements are needed. Based on this feedback and ADA access to the event space, the design team developed a concept plan to seek broader community input on improvements at the Outdoor Performance Center.
In February 2024, the public was invited to preview a concept plan and provide feedback in a survey. The results are below.
History
In 1964, Gene C. Reid created a makeshift band stage in the city's park. In 1974, just one year after DeMeester's retirement from conducting, the bandshell was upgraded into a full performance center capable of hosting plays, musical performances, and the Tucson Pops Orchestra. It also gained a new grass area capable of accommodating 7,000 seats, along with areas for festival activities, vendors, and food trucks. In 1987, the center was officially named after DeMeester, and he even made a guest appearance dancing with the Tucson Pops Orchestra for his 99th birthday. Georges DeMeester passed away in December 1995.
Who was Georges DeMeester?
He was the conductor of the Tucson Pops Orchestra from 1955 to 1973.
What happens there today
The venue hosts a variety of events, from summer concerts to family-friendly activities, including performances by the Tucson Symphony Pops and international jazz festivals. Visitors can bring chairs or blankets to sit on the grass in front of the stage. Food trucks, restrooms, and ramadas are typically available, and dogs are welcome.
