The City of Tucson is divided into four patrol divisions and a downtown district. Organized Retail Theft, Narcotics Arrest

On May 19, 2024, officers from Operations Division West (ODW) were conducting proactive patrols in the area of 4500 North Oracle Road to address a recent series of shoplifting and theft from local businesses. While in a nearby parking lot, officers saw a suspect run from a business with merchandise in his hands. They quickly set up containment and detained him. The male admitted to having stolen some golf clubs to support his drug habit. He was also found to be in possession of several M-30 fentanyl pills and equipment he used to steal the golf clubs.

The male was booked into jail on charges including organized retail theft, possession of narcotics, and possession of narcotic paraphernalia.

From the DEA's "One Pill Can Kill" website: “In 2023, DEA seized more than 80 million fentanyl-laced fake pills and nearly 12,000 pounds of fentanyl powder. The 2023 seizures are equivalent to more than 381 million lethal doses of fentanyl.”

Division Info

Operations Division West (ODW), sometimes referred to as "Team 2", provides police services to the northwest part of the City of Tucson. ODW is housed at the Westside Police Service Center, 1310 West Miracle Mile. The division serves an area bounded by city limits to the north and west, Campbell Avenue to the east, and 22nd Street/Starr Pass Boulevard to the south, and includes parts of City Wards 1, 3, and 6.

ODW's uniformed patrol squads are supervised by sergeants and serve around the clock to provide basic police services in the division. The division also includes bicycle/walking squads in the Downtown District, a Community Response Team (CRT) that addresses specific problems, and a Neighborhood Crimes Section of detectives who investigate a variety of crimes that occur in the division. The officers of the bicycle/walking squads provide a highly visible police presence, including in areas not generally accessible to vehicles, such as alleys, vacant lots, and parks. This is especially helpful downtown and along 4th Avenue.

Operations Division West is home to the Tucson Mall, one of the city's largest malls. There are many other businesses, particularly along Oracle Road and Stone Avenue, and a number of car dealerships along Auto Mall Drive. There are two Pima Community College campuses and two public high schools within division boundaries. Interstate 10 and Union Pacific railroad tracks bisect ODW on a north/south line.

Neighborhood Info

Some of Tucson's oldest neighborhoods are in Operations Division West, which has 22 organized Neighborhood Associations. ODW neighborhoods are quite diverse, ranging from historic barrio areas west of downtown, established residential areas in the center of the division, the Old Pascua Yaqui Village south of Grant Road, and newer developments on the far west side, including the J.W. Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa.

Several older Neighborhood Associations on the west side of town joined together in the 1990s to form the Westside Coalition. This coalition was selected as a federally sponsored "Weed & Seed" site in the early 2000s and has been operating successfully for many years.

Operations Division West follows the community policing model of the Tucson Police Department. Patrol officers in the division are assigned to work with neighborhoods and their respective Neighborhood Associations on an ongoing basis. ODW personnel are also available to provide information and assistance regarding crime prevention and the Crime Free Multi-Housing Program.
