Western Hills II / Las Vistas Project

The City of Tucson Department of Transportation and Mobility (DTM) plans to repave ALL of the neighborhood streets in the Western Hills II and Las Vistas neighborhoods, along with upgrades to sidewalks and curb ramps. Bus stops will be enhanced to include seating, refurbished shelters where possible, and trash receptacles, and bus shelters no longer served by Sun Tran will be removed.

Funding:

• $2 million - Mayor Romero's FY22 pavement allocation
• $2 million - Federal funding from Congress
• $6 million - Tucson Delivers: Better Streets | Safe Streets (Prop 411)

Timeline:

• Construction from Early September 2026 – September 2027

The El Paso & Southwestern Greenway Extension, 18th Street Bike Boulevard, and 36th Street Pedestrian Safety & Walkability projects are in the design phase.

Funding:

• $6 million - Tucson Delivers: Strong Connections (Prop 407) & Tucson Delivers: Better Streets | Safe Streets (Prop. 411)

• $390,000 - Mayor Romero's Storm to Shade allocation

Timeline:

•  In Design, Estimated Construction: 2027

James Thomas Park will undergo major improvements, starting with a path connecting the neighborhood park to the loop trail at Kino Environmental Restoration Project. Other park improvements proposed include renovating the basketball court and tennis court surfaces, restrooms, and adding shade.

Funding:

• $655,000 - Tucson Delivers: Great Parks (Prop 407)
• $250,000 - Federal funding from Congress

Timeline:

•  Phase 3 Prop 407, Estimated Construction: Fall 2026

Tucson Water replaced two water mains in the Las Vistas neighborhood. These water mains were crucial to replace before paving in order to reduce any need to cut into new pavement in the future.

Funding:

• $7.7 million - Water service improvements Sunland Vista Basin Joint City of Tucson and Pima County Regional Flood Control  

Joint City of Tucson and Pima County Regional Flood Control District stormwater management and green infrastructure site managed under the City of Tucson’s Storm to Shade program.

Funding:

• $750,000 - Pima County Regional Flood Control District + outreach contract with Tucson Clean & Beautiful

Tucson Clean & Beautiful's Gorgeous Forgeus RAINworks project in partnership with the Las Vistas Neighborhood Association with contributions with discretionary funds from Mayor Romero and Ward 5, includes new greenway and accessible community green space along South Forgeus Avenue from East 36th Street to James Thomas Park.
