Water Conservation at Your Fingertips

On average, household water leaks account for 12% of total water use, driving up water bills and wasting a vital desert resource. Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) is an innovative tool that will allow Tucson Water customers to reduce excessive water use and lower bills.

AMI can remotely collect meter readings that provide hourly water usage data compared to traditional monthly readings. The new technology improves the timeliness and accuracy of meter readings.

With AMI, customers will be able to:

  • actively monitor usage to conserve water
  • receive notifications about high water use
  • customize alerts
  • compare current usage to previous use

Project Timeline: Bringing AMI to Tucson Water

Pilot Program (Completed)

Tucson Water upgraded approximately 100 meters in a pilot program funded by a conservation grant from the Water Infrastructure Finance Authority of Arizona (WIFA). This small-scale test allowed staff to evaluate AMI technology and its potential to improve leak detection and customer service among a variety of residential and commercial customers.

Initial Rollout to Non-Residential Customers (Spring 2026)

Tucson Water will install AMI on approximately 45,000 meters for all commercial/industrial, reclaim, construction, and City-owned accounts. This phase helps identify technical procedures and operational efficiencies in preparation for system-wide expansion. This is scheduled to begin in the Spring of 2026.

Residential Customer Installation (2027 - 2029)

Following the non-residential customers, AMI installation will begin for all residential customers. Residential rollout is expected to be completed by the end of 2029.

Meter Installation

Utility Partners of America (UPA) logo

You’ll receive a notification by mail and door hangers with specific details before work begins in your area. Tucson Water crew and our partners, Utility Partners of America (UPA), will be clearly identifiable with proper uniforms, work vehicles and badges during installation.

To prepare for your meter upgrade:

  • You do not need to be available during the meter replacement unless you are otherwise notified.
  • Ensure the area around the meter is clear of debris, parked vehicles, and other obstructions
  • Unlock gates or provide access if your meter is behind a fence
  • Expect a brief interruption to water service during the upgrade (usually no more than 30 minutes)

After Installation

All upgraded meters are tested for accuracy before and after installation.

You may notice a slight change in water pressure or clarity after installation. This is normal and temporary. Running cold water from a faucet for a few minutes typically resolves any issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will I be notified before my meter is upgraded?

Yes. You’ll receive a mailed notice with specific installation details in advance. There's no need to be present for the upgrade, but please ensure the meter area is accessible.

How long will the installation take?

Most installations are completed in less than 30 minutes, with only a brief water service interruption.

Will I be able to track my water usage online?

We will be launching a customer portal that will provide access to AMI data in early 2027. Once available, you’ll be able to view hourly water usage, receive alerts about high water use, and set custom notifications.

How does AMI support the One Water 2100 Plan and the City of Tucson Climate Action Plan?

AMI plays a critical role in supporting Tucson Water’s commitment to sustainable, resilient water management. As part of our One Water 2100 Plan, AMI helps us manage water as a single, connected system – aligning with our goal of using every drop wisely.

Here’s how AMI contributes:

  • Efficient Water Use: By providing hourly data on water usage, AMI allows both Tucson Water and our customers to track consumption patterns. This insight helps us reduce water waste, implement targeted conservation measures, and ensure we’re using the right water for the right purposes, whether it’s for drinking, irrigation, or industrial needs.
  • Supporting Demand Management: AMI helps us monitor and manage water demand more effectively, especially during peak times. By optimizing water distribution and improving efficiency, we support the City of Tucson Climate Action Plan's goals for reducing energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, as well as building resilience against climate impacts.
  • Empowering Customers: With AMI, customers have access to real-time data that can help them adjust their water usage habits, conserve more water, and lower their bills. This aligns with our shared vision of a sustainable future, where every action – big or small – makes a difference in reducing environmental impact.

Together, AMI, the One Water 2100 Plan, and the City of Tucson Climate Action Plan represent a unified approach to ensuring a sustainable, water-resilient future for Tucson and the Sonoran Desert.
