The new skate park, located beneath the freeway underpass at Cushing Street and Interstate 10, is the result of years of public support, fundraising efforts, and multiple funding contributions totaling $2,648,258.67. Major contributions include $1.5M City Framework, and the City Investment Plan; $300,000 from the Tohono O’odham Nation Grant; $250,000 each from the Mayor’s Office and the Ward 1 participatory budgeting process - “Budget De La Gente”; $200,000 from Rio Nuevo, $100,000 from the Pascua Yaqui Tribe; and $40,258.67 to date in donations.

March 2026 Update on Cushing Street Skatepark from the City of Tucson:

  • At the end of 2024, Cushing Street Skatepark became fully funded. All funding, including donations, is secured with the City of Tucson to be spent when construction commences.
  • In February 2025, the Mayor and Council voted unanimously to approve an agreement with the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) for the authority to construct and maintain Cushing Street Skate Park on ADOT right of way.
  • In March 2025, ADOT informed the City of Tucson that additional review was required by their legal team prior to signing the agreement.
  • In April 2025, ADOT informed the City that the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) would need to approve the project before construction.
  • Throughout the summer of 2025, the City of Tucson worked with ADOT to meet the requests of the FHWA.
  • In December 2025, ADOT submitted the Formal Application to FHWA.
  • In January 2026, the Federal Highway Administration requested changes to the application agreements that govern the construction and maintenance of the park. ADOT has acknowledged the request and is working to address the changes.
  • As of February 2026, ADOT and the City of Tucson are working to finalize agreements, permits, and approvals to solicit construction.
  • On March 24, 2026, the IGA between the City of Tucson, ADOT, and the FHWA was fully executed.
  • Also on March 24, 2026, the project solicitation for construction was released. Construction is expected to begin in early summer and take approximately 6 months.
