Parks and Recreation really appreciates the community’s input on the proposed improvements so far, and we’re looking forward to continuing to work with residents of all ages to expand opportunities to connect with nature, interact with local art, and build community at the park.

WHAT’S THE LATEST?

Parks and Recreation is using community feedback from outreach to date to develop one cohesive design and move it into construction documentation and permitting. We anticipate that construction will commence in early 2027.

BACKGROUND | COMMUNITY OUTREACH TO DATE
Parks and Recreation circulated an online survey from Sept. 26 to Oct. 19, 2025, to reintroduce the community to the planned improvements and learn more about what folks would like to see enhanced at Udall Park. 1,266 community members participated in the survey and shared some excellent feedback! Please check out the results below.

On Dec. 30, 2025, Parks and Recreation worked with 27 kiddos participating in KIDCO’s Winter Break Camp to engage them in the design process for the new play area. Through a series of Fill-in-the-blank, drawing, and modeling activities, kids shared some awesome play ideas! Snakes, crystals, rocks, volcanoes, and plants were popular themes, and kids emphasized their interest in climbing, sliding, swinging, and running at the new play area. Preferred colors for the play features were blue, green, and brown. Take a look at some of their inspiring ideas below.

On Mar. 5, 2026, Parks and Recreation hosted a Community Open House to review the results of community outreach to date and present 3 different play concepts for residents to consider. For those who couldn’t attend the meeting, Parks posted a video walkthrough of the play concepts to the project webpage and circulated an online survey from Mar.5-Mar. 26 for residents to vote for their favorite concept and features. 222 community members participated in the online survey, and we learned that although the Desert Wild concept received the most votes, there are aspects to all 3 concepts that folks would like to see incorporated into the final play area design. Parks and Recreation will move forward with an overall Desert Wild theme that integrates the community’s top play feature preferences (e.g. zip-line, non-traditional swings, embankment slide, nature play elements, rope play structure, +). Take a look at the full survey results in the link below.

To complement the broader community survey, Parks also connected with kiddos participating in KIDCO’s Spring Break camp to learn more about what they would like to see built. In sticker voting, the Desert Wild and Earth Explorers play concepts were tied with 19 votes each, followed by 15 votes for Space Rodeo.

Overall, KIDCO’s 5–12-year-old play experts would most like to see a zip-line, bike and scooter features, desert animal play sculpture, rattlesnake friends slide, non-traditional/ group swing area, boulder scramble hill with slide, and rope play structure.

In addition to community-wide and KIDCO outreach, Parks and Recreation has also been working with an Inclusive Play Advisory Group for Udall Park, made up of caretakers, service providers, and individuals representing the disability community. This group will review the full park design as it develops to ensure it’s both outrageously fun AND wildly inclusive!

Baseball Field #3: Chase Ridenour Field

On Tuesday, Aug. 19, Tucson Mayor and City Council approved the renaming of Field #3 to "Chase Ridenour Field." Chase Ridenour grew up in Tucson and played baseball with Sabino Canyon Little League (SCLL). Following his passing, his family has been instrumental in supporting youth baseball in the community by establishing a financial fund dedicated to SCLL. This fund helps provide capital improvements to the league and ensures that all children. The renaming recognizes the Ridenour family’s contributions, which have made significant improvements to field #3 possible, including the purchase of a new scoreboard.
